Food art: Dinosaur Birthday Cake

Vanilla cake, dulce de leche filling with walnuts. Chocolate icing from scratch. Chocolate rocks. Dinosaur-shaped sprinkles. 10inch pan.

I made this for my boyfriend's 20th birthday. Since he was little, he's always liked Dinosaurs, so I made him a surprise dinocake. The cake was decorated with three plastic dinosaurs and two palm trees, with chocolate rocks scattered. I drew the both of us running away from the dinosaurs. The dinosaur sprinkles spell out "HAPPY 20!!" for the visually challenged. Walnuts were added into the dulce-de-leche filling because he loves walnuts. :3

This cake was a big success! It came out very moist and delicious. The icing was made from an old family recipe, and overall the cake wasn't overwhelmingly sweet, which was great. Fed the both of us, his mother and her husband several times, all of his friends, and his father, with extra slices left.

Ceramic: Punyama Punpun teapot WIP pt. 2 (pre-fire glaze)

Part two of Punpun teapot photos!
Punpun succesfuly survived his first round in the kiln. Sometimes, you do something wrong while making something out of clay, and your piece either breaks or explodes in the kiln.
Thankfully I am the claym@ster and Punpun came out from the fires completely flawless. I sanded him down so he is also silkysmooth!

He is currently inside the kiln as we speak, and will be ready to take home by Monday!
These are photos of his pre-fire glazing. The colors are the same as shown, but they will be alot brighter. Punpun will be superyellow.

Ceramic: Punyama Punpun teapot WIP

Currently making my final project in my Ceramics class.
The assignment was to make a functional teapot! The teacher told us to be creative, so I made punpun.
Punpun is a teapot now :3

Asano Inio copy sketches

0.7mm and 0.5mm mechanical pencils, printer paper.
eye-copy from Asano Inio's Oyasumi Punpun.(original)

Many people will tell you that copying is bad. It is. It's really sad when someone takes your artwork and claims it's their own. I'd know, it's happened to me a few times... But I think copying can be good, as long as it's only meant for practice or learning.
There's a certain experience that you get by eye-copying like this. In pencil sketches or when imitation a CG style, I've learned that this is probably THE BEST way to learn an artist's style. Like this, I learned Asano Inio's lines and curves, the way he draws specific things, and the overall process of his art. Asano is my favorite artist and inspiration at the moment, so I was very happy to learn how his art worked.

Non-art: Birthday!

I always feel obliged to make a blog post on my birthday, since it's really fun to go back and see how my old birthdays went. Today (April 21st) I turned 18! Overall, it was a very positive and happy birthday. I think if my relationship with my family hadn't improved so drastically in the last few months, today would have been much more difficult.

I got my first birthday wishes from Tsubasa, a friend from Tokyo, through a skype call. Then there was Yuuhei, who played an electric guitar cover of "Happy Birthday" to me through another skype call.THEN after that, I got a phone call from my friend Alex, also telling me happy birthday.
I woke up to my mom and sister (and dog) singing an obnoxious but cute happy birthday to me~ The entire day I got birthday wishes left and right, presents from friends, etc. My friend Jackie spoiled me with alot of ice cream, and Sade drew Mari as a Persona 4 character lol~ Alex revealed to me that he is composing a song for me as a present (but due to work is not done with it yet), and my mother came home with flowers and balloons for me.

My dinner from Mimi's Cafe: Pasta Jambalaya!

After dinner, I got to play around with my delicious new amp and ate cupcakes from Sprinkles.
My guitar, my new amp, and my Dollfie
Day ended with some SL, calls from relatives, and lazing around. No school tomorrow~ Friends want to take me to a sushi bar. Cheers for another good year!

Flower Girl

My sister's ex-boyfriend visited for a steak dinner. The steak was alright, although a bit too chewy for my tastes (I'm a rare-steak kind of girl). He gave me his little journal to draw in and told me to "draw something sick". I drew this while listening to chouchou and antihoney.
His art was pretty strange, too. Check after the jump break for his art..!

A birthday present for my favoritest cousin, Carlos, aka El Buytre. The weird signs at the top are today's date in the mayan calendar. He follows this calendar religiously and also loves to sing nahuatl healing sings with his goatskin drum :O lol~

Mori sketch

a really quick sketch I did while waiting for the black slip on my vase to dry today. lol~ Thankfully it was the last layer I needed to put on there.

It's an image inspired by Mori Girl and http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/1290582619 which has been looping in my head all day.

Portraits of classmates.

I was waiting for the glaze to dry on my vase in Ceramics class today, so I asked if anyone wanted a portrait. I had done one for a friend yesterday(below), so after seeing that, they all wanted one lol~

Faces from the side

I realized I suck really badly at profiles after drawing some raburabu pictures on valentines. Therefore, I started to practice during my classes. All the faces drawn are real people/characters with the exception of the old man! I just wanted to draw old people.

Valentine's choco

Paint tool SAI
Working on this ATM. Was drawing it while livestreaming! It's a challenge to draw that arm with all the foreshortening and all, but surprisingly I used no references at all.

Love Plusplusplusplus

I managed to get my old livestream working. I drew some in the morning, then drew some more.. special artwork later in the day when I got home.

This Chen was made in 4 minutes: the duration of a chen song.

I ate an entire bagrollthing of Ritz.

I was feeling superlazy at this point. Quick yuyuko
Some drawings got lost due to my computer crashing. Goodbye, 5AM Yukari and penismonster.

Textures! How do they work?

Paint tool SAI, PS CS2, textures from google search
I wanted to draw something today. I started drawing myself, and was going to make it a cutesy drawing about HOW COLD IT IS. However, I didn't like how it looked, so I messed around til I came up with this mess.

My precious!

Dollfie Dream 2, DDH-01
One of my most prized and expensive possessions: this doll! She's my first and so far only BJD. I don't really have a name I like for her yet, but for now I'm using Mifuyu
Unlike many DD owners who buy character dolls (a fully assembled and painted doll based on a character), I went the custom way for mine. Her head was ~50 dollars, body was 230 dollars,  and everything else ran for about 20-30 dollars each.
Character dolls are insanely expensive, so I went the custom way since it was hundreds of dollars cheaper, and I wanted to create my own doll rather than have a character. Dollfie Dreams are ~50cm tall (that's around 2 feet!) and are made of vinyl, compared to resin like normal BJDs.

Alot of people like to hate on Dollfie Dreams because they're so animu looking, but I think they can be insanely cute if they're painted and dressed right. I've seen alot of dollfie owners who have really creepishly anime dolls.. ;_;

Does anyone else own a doll? Is anyone creeped out by ball-jointed dolls? My sister sure is.

The Girl.... without a diamond earring.

Paint tool SAI. Jan 31st
I just finished this. actually. I'm... kind of shocked. I wanted to do something painterly, and I was originally drawing myself with a hoodie in the rain... and then it just changed completely and turned into this.

It looks slightly creepy, huh?

Sunday, January 30, 2011

I seriously just drew this.

It's late at night, and our dear friend Mari is trying to go to sleep.
She feels impatient and irritated, making her restless; she does not know why.
Suddenly, the door opens, with a white gloved hand on the other end.
It is Ronove, and he wipes off a brow of sweat from his forehead as he pants.
Mari, goshujin-sama, here are some freshly baked cookies and a glass of chocolate milk."
Mari relished in the taste of the chewy, delectable and sweet cookies; and quenched her thirst with the chocolate milk.
Then Mari calmed down, and was finally able to sleep.
"Good night, my sweet princess."
 The end.

Blue

Paint tool SAI, PS CS2.

This is my most recent CG piece. I drew this originally because I wanted to draw a cute yukata girl with one of those sparklers. I later decided to add a more grim feel to it, and gave her a blank expression while she emptied the water out of the bag (killing the fish. how dark!). Originally, the lineart was red and colors were much different. My friends suggested that I keep a water theme throughout the piece.

Before I finished coloring it, I decided to change the colors to blue, and added a tear rolling down the girl's cheek. It completely changed the feeling of the image!

Mari Kurisumasu

Paint tool SAI. December 25 2010
I drew these for my Japanese friends on SL as christmas presents. They were influenced by nendoroids.
Top columm, left to right: Gaagaa, Luna, Luna (alternate ver.)
Bottom column: Maple, Soleil, Note

Shoutout to my Gensokyo homies!

Hina from Touhou. Paint tool SAI, PS CS2. October 2010
This was a request. I'm really happy with my coloring on this.

Eyes

Pencil, paper. Drawn around December/November last year.
Wanted to draw eyes, and drew a girl around a pair I drew. She reminds me of Hirano Aya for some reason.

I always lose things in my bag.

Pencil, paper. Drawn last year.

Not much to say about this one.

Candy Bikini

Pencil, printer paper. Drawn summer 2010.

Simple cute summer drawing based on my avatar at the time in SL. I really like her sitting pose, and her drinking pose. I don't like the other one though, it looks slightly derpy.

Save the Earth

Pencil, Colored Pencil, Printer paper. Drawn sometime last year.

This is a drawing based on this outfit in SL. I was given this as a present, and the outfit came with a globe that rotated around your avatar. It's a very innocent picture! I really like how the sleeves came out, and the natural gradient of the dress.

I am one with the plants, bro~

Mechanical pencil, printer paper. Drawn a few weeks ago.

My friends have started drawing these Pendeogan things that are popular on deviantart. They're elves with tails that have addictions. They draw them alot, so to not feel lonely I made a character too. The male is Jordan, he's my friend's design. The girl is my character, Soleil. I feel like a little girl all over again, making original characters and the such! Hehe~

This drawing was a slight challenge for me, since I don't draw males that often. My friends however, draw them all the time. I'm proud with the outcome.

Good morning!

(It's actually 11:20PM! Gyaaasp I should be in bed!)

Welcome~ This is my new art/hobby blog. I decided to create a place to post my art since deviantart sucks.
I'm Mari, from the U.S. I speak Spanish, English, and Japanese. I like art, technology, fashion, anime/manga/games, science and psychology.

I'll be blogging about several things! I'll be posting my art: sketches, ideas, CG, etc. I'll also be posting about games that I play, purchases, fashion trends, anime/manga, and the such. Maybe a personal post every now and then will be nice~

The blog's title is a pun of the anime "Hidamari Sketch." Since I'm Mari, and I draw, hidaMARI sketch seems like a silly fitting title, right?

Looking forward to posting!

-Mari
