Textures! How do they work?

I wanted to draw something today. I started drawing myself, and was going to make it a cutesy drawing about HOW COLD IT IS. However, I didn't like how it looked, so I messed around til I came up with this mess.

    For some reason, the three of them lined up like that makes me feel as if they're about to spin around and start singing.

    Might just be me, but the gritty grey really gives off a sidewalk chalk feel. I like the way "this mess" came out.
